The true strength of Viktor & Rolf’s work is its genuine modesty. Although from time to time they make grand statements and their output can be astonishing in its proportions, the essence of their work is high-quality simplicity: look around you, take what you see and improve on it. No idealistic aims or wild fantasies – just add a golden finish to the lead of daily life.

All this is entirely in keeping with the Low Countries tradition that idiosyncrasy and uniqueness are only valued if they are kept at arm’s length, and that a modest attitude is expected. Viktor & Rolf have succeeded precisely because they have not rejected these conventions, yet have developed a wonderful sincerity that tests the boundaries of this sham context and so exposes its falsehood. They have thus set a new standard for coming generations of artists and designers without ever repudiating their origins.

L’atelier Renault

L’atelier Renault, a 50-m2 lounge with an attached terrace giving on to the beach and overlooking the sea, will take up residence in Cannes at the Majestic 63 beach during the Cannes Film Festival.

As a part of Renault’s continuing commitment to reduce CO2 emissions the L’atelier will provide to all festival goers a unique, free service of recharging mobile phones using a solar charger. Every day at lunch time, two hostesses dressed as cinema ushers will be offering guests this service. As it does every year, Renault will also be providing more than 100 vehicles to escort stars to the red carpet. The official festival fleet will be parading along the Croisette in a non-stop ballet of taffeta, tuxedos and bow ties.

Armed with splashes of bright color, and intriguing aesthetic contrasts Y-3′s Autumn/Winter 2010-11 collection brought a healthy dose of fun back to the runway.

This season, Yohji Yamamoto injected Y-3 with as much humor as style, presenting an ode to masked superheroes like Zorro and the Scarlet Pimpernel. Wearing voluminous, layered sportswear in vibrant colorways, the models stalked the runway to the folk tunes of Simon & Garfunkel.

Y-3 has always melded technology with tradition, and never has that been more apparent. For Fall, the label known for sport elegance took inspiration from bespoke English tailoring, reinterpreting classic shapes in futuristic materials, or alternately, classic materials in futuristic shapes.

A leading company in the manufacturing of clothing and protective products for motorcycling and all dynamic sports, Dainese , set up the exhibition À toute épreuve which will be held from 2nd to 8th August at the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris.

The exhibition presents the history of protection for the human body from its origins to the current most innovative technologies, through a multimedia itinerary divided into four parts full of symbols, photographs and videos.

The first two sections look at the correspondence between Nature and the very first protectivearmours developed by mankind.

The third section of the exhibition is dedicated to “smart suits”. The best example of these is D-air®, the airbag for motorcyclists, developed by Dainese. Combining electronics, ergonomics and design, Dair® is the product of the most leading edge technological innovation, the result of years of detailed study and research. Today’s ergonomic suits and protective clothing guarantee safety for all skiing, snowboarding, mountain bike and water sports enthusiasts, but other sports are also already on the horizon, such as horse riding.

And the fourth section of the exhibition is dedicated to the future. Astronauts’ suits have also contributed to development of the technology applied to motorcyclist’s clothing and vice versa: the know-how of this sector, for example, has been valuable in proceeding with the Biosuit project with the MIT in Boston: an under-suit for astronauts which guarantees easy and comfortable movement and optimum protection in view of the first mission to Mars.

First Squad

It is 1942. The Red Army is putting up a violent and effective resistance against the German invaders. In a deadly air raid, teenaged Nadya is shell-shocked. Recovering from her concussion, Nadya discovers her new gift – the ability to foresee the “Moments of Truth” – the most critical moments of future combat encounters. She can also see which individual’s actions will decide the final outcome. Nadya’s ability is indispensable for the classified 6th Division of the Russian Military Intelligence, which is waging a secret war against the “Ahnenerbe” – an occult order within the SS.

First Squad, the joint venture of Russian authorship and Japanese animation, juxtaposes fiction and non-fiction, placing a tale of supernatural warfare into the real world. Tapping into the immensely talented Studio 4C, all the fantastical elements were animated.

The original plan for the project was to make a series out of it. What comprises the film is the first episode, expanded to almost feature length with the talking heads of German and Russian veterans from the battles used as a staging ground for the supernatural elements of the story.

Well intended and entertaining.

Design Innovation from Vauxhall

The revolutionary Insignia’s design of a new Vauxhall Astra that converts all advantages of a saloon into a compact model has been turning heads across Europe.
You can’t help but notice its warm and inviting wraparound interior and an elegant finish suggested by its curvaceous fitted decor and quality trim. Clearly, concerns regarding storage space were also a critical consideration.
Vauxhall Astra has a patented ‘Flexfloor’ adjustable boot space system and ‘Flexfix’ bike carrier. There are also bespoke cubby-holes located throughout to accommodate everything from your MP3 player to your first-aid kit and coffee cup.
Externally, sculptural surfaces interplay with crisp lines of precision. The new Astra produces 13.3% less carbon emissions than its predecessor, primarily because of the specifics of this exterior design – 600 hours in a wind tunnel have resulted in optimum aerodynamic performance and fuel efficiency. The soft nose is optimised for crash performance and pedestrian protection, while the sleek profile and sporty precision of the bodywork accentuates the car’s planted and athletic stance.
